How to Estimate Characteristic Value for Design – Seminar

Seminar Conducted by Prof KK Phoon.

The purpose of this lecture is to take the audience through three key concepts so that the characteristic value can be estimated in a more consistent way: (1) Statistics – effect of the coefficient of variation on the 5% fractile of a soil property measured at a point, (2) Spatial variability – effect of the scale of fluctuation on the 5% fractile of a spatial average defined over a zone of ground governing the behaviour of a geotechnical structure at a limit state [refer to Clause], and (3) Mechanics – effect of failure mechanism at a limit state on the 5% fractile of a mobilized strength. Some examples are provided. No prior knowledge of statistics or probability needed.
