Synopsis of lecture

Singapore’s space constraint can also be opportunities for future economic development with unique solutions. Some new space creation strategies and methods have been developed at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU Singapore). Some of these approaches will also enable Singapore to become a key technology provider for urban solutions to the world. For creating space laterally or underground, methods such as 3D GeoData system, new land reclamation and seawall construction methods, or biocement for soil improvement will be introduced by Prof Chu.

For above ground structures, Prefabricated Prefinished Volumetric Construction (PPVC) is now a preferred construction method but it has both pros and cons. Prof Tan will highlight the challenges and provide an alternative system. For below ground structures in MND’s master plan, potential uses include transportation, utility ducts, warehousing, reservoirs, data centres, etc. JTC, DSTA, SCDF and NTU Singapore have undertaken a major grant call to tackle fire safety of underground space and fire resistance of underground structures. He will present the latest findings from his research team and also share his ideas on developing a maintenance framework for underground infrastructure.

Thank you.
